about

Before he died, my father told me that no-one from our family had ever visited the grave of his Uncle George Brawn, who was killed in The Great War in 1918. He asked me to go if I ever had the opportunity ... I agreed I would.

I finally made the journey in the summer of 2011 on a trip to Belgium. I visited the town of Ypres, various battlefield sites & war memorials before travelling South to Mont Huon Military Cemetery at Le Treport in Northern France where my Great Uncle's grave is located.

My own Grandfather took part in the conflict, but in common with many of the survivors he didn't speak about his experiences beyond a few isolated details, so to go there and stand where they fought was a very moving experience. The endless rows of neat white headstones and countless names of the fallen provide a stark reminder to successive generations of the terrible personal cost of War.

This song is my tribute ... if you have any questions then please ask.

Donations are welcome (Whatever you can afford) Proceeds will go to The War Memorials Trust, working for the protection and conservation of war memorials in the UK www.warmemorials.org

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission do a terrific job in maintaining the cemeteries www.cwgc.org.

Thanks to Phil Senior & Jamie Singleton for their suggestions & musical input ...

Metal & Mud

There’s a plot in a field of sorrow and grace
And a promise I made to go there some day
And share for a time the ground where they stood
And gave up their lives to metal and mud

Where metal and mud meet flesh and blood
Where metal and mud meet flesh and blood
At the going down of the sun
And when the morning comes
I will remember …

You can still see them now in old dancing light
Fate yet unknown, marching with pride
Where duty had called the souls of the good
Into the night of metal and mud

There’s a plot in a field where they remain
A garden of peace from a wasteland of pain
Names on a stone, tended with love
Freed from the hell of metal and mud

about

Glyn Bailey UK

A boyhood spent watching ancient films, reading half-digested biographies and media stories, the numerous faltering careers including egg delivery man, bed salesman and MPs assistant, combined with the experience of living brought up in a shabby sea-side town like Blackpool, make up the backdrop to Glyn Bailey’s music.

Live he is currently backed by four piece band The Beholden.
